When to Use a Surcingle
Worn over the saddle on top of the girth, a surcingle acts as a secondary retention strap. If the primary girth were to fail, the surcingle keeps the saddle in place — a small extra layer of safety that's standard equipment in most racing and eventing disciplines.
How to Fit a Surcingle Correctly
- Fit it over the saddle after you've girthed up and tested the primary girth tension
- The biothane girthing point sits against the horse's belly, behind the elbow — same line as the main girth
- Adjust so the elastic has give but isn't loose — you should be able to slide a flat hand under it, not a fist
- Re-check after the warm-up; horses often "blow up" before settling, and the surcingle will need taking up a hole
- Tuck loose straps neatly — flapping ends scare horses and can get caught on a stride
